Settled in the early 1830s, Marshfield was laid out in 1856 in the Ozarks Uplands, making it the highest county seat in Missouri. It is named for the adult home town of Daniel Webster in Massachusetts. The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad was built through town in 1872, stimulating economic growth for the area which produced livestock, poultry and dairy products. Astronomer Edwin P. Hubble grew up in Marshfield. [History of Marshfield, www.marshfieldmo.gov, accessed May, 2016]
