TOWNS

Established in 1668, Currituck County was one of the first areas settled in the U.S. An original North Carolina county, Currituck County was one of the five original ports. [History of Currituck County, www.co.currituck.nc.us, accessed December, 2013]

The construction of the present day courthouse is said to date from 1776, but no records exist for construction of a courthouse from 1869 until the enlargement in 1897, so it evidently dates from before 1869. It was then half its present size. The courthouse was remodeled in 1952 and a rear addition connected the courthouse with the east end of the old jail.
