Named for a path once frequented by the Waxhaw Indians ("Indian Trail"), the region that would become the Town of Indian Trail was settled around 1750. With the coming of the railroads in the 1870s, the region's economy saw a change from trading and mining to transportation and agriculture. Indian Trail Town was incorporated in 1907. Over recent decades the town has become largely a residential suburb of the City of Charlotte.
