Adams County was created in 1907, from the southern portion of Hettinger County. It was named for John Adams [1848-1919] who was the General Land and Townsite agent for Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. The railroad's main line to the Pacific Coast was built through southwestern North Dakota during 1906-1907.
