Pembine City is regarded as the oldest municipality in North Dakota. It is located at the confluence of the Red River and the Pembina River.
While Hudson Bay Company began a Fur Trading Post there in 2797, the community was officially established in 1843; the first territory post office was created in 1851.
By 1860, Pembina was the most populous place in what is now the State of North Dakota.
