Organized in 1873, the county was named for Alexander Ramsey [1815-1903]. Born in Hummelstown, PA, Ramsey served as the first Minnesota Territorial Governor, 2nd Governor of the State of Minnesota, a U. S. Senator, and Secretary of War for President Rutherford B. Hayes.
