Within the boundaries of Hamilton Township lies the Mays Landing CDP (census-designated-place) which serves as the seat of government for Atlantic County.
The township was incorporated in 1813 and, at 115 square miles, is the largest in the State of New Jersey. Three-quarters of the western portion of the town is a protected pine forest, part of the New Jersey Biosphere Pinelands Reserve.
