Beginnings [1]

Incorporated in 1895, the Borough of Pompton Lakes is 3.2 square miles in area and home to approximately 10,640 residents occupying nearly 4,000 households. Natural assets such as the Ramapo, Pequannock and Wanaque Rivers, Pompton Lake, an extensive system of open space and the Ramapo State Forest, offer residents and visitors relaxing year-round recreational activities.

The Borough has a rich history in ironworks and military munitions production. The Pompton Furnace supplied cannonballs to support the Revolutionary War and Cannonball Trail (a hiking trail in Ramapo State Forest) and was used as a transportation route by the Continental Army. By 1886, the Pompton Lakes Works (PLW) facility was conducting operations as an explosives manufacturing plant in the north east corner of the Borough. Purchased in 1902 by E.I. DuPont De Nemours "DuPont," the plant supplied munitions throughout World War I and World War II and employed a great number of Borough residents.
