Beginnings [1]

The southeastern part of Chenango County, in which the town of Afton is located, was opened for settlement in the 1780's. Easily accessible via Indian trails and the early turnpike system, lands along the Susquehanna River were settled quickly. The town of Afton itself was formed in 1857 after bitter rivalry led to its secession from the town of Bainbridge. The name Afton was taken from Robert Burns' poem "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton," an allusion to the Susquehanna River which flows gently through the village and town.
