Beginnings [1]

The village of Franklin is located in the Ouleout Creek Valley, approximately 7 miles east of the creek's juncture with the Susquehanna River at Unadilla, New York. Franklin Village is situated on an elongated shelf of land immediately east of the creek, which at this point runs in a north to south direction. The valley floor is relatively narrow (2000-3000 feet in width) and is surrounded by 300-foot high hillsides at the east and west. New York Route 357, Franklin's Main Street, connects the village with Oneonta and Delhi to the north and east and Unadilla to the west, tracing the route of the 1802 Catskill Turnpike through the valley. Franklin's small business district occurs primarily along the east side of Main Street near the center of the village. The north and south ends of Main Street are primarily residential. A second north-south road, Center Street, parallels Main Street for approximately 2500 feet one block to the west. This road and the intersecting cross streets are also primarily residential and together with Main Street constitute the full extend of the village development.
