Walton was incorporated in 1797 and named for William Walton, one of the founders of the New York State Chamber of Commerce, the first state chamber to be established in the U.S. The first settlers were Dr. Platt Townsend [1733-1828] and Joshua Pine, who came to the area about 1785 from Long Island.
