Beginnings [1]

Among the early settlers were Nathaniel Shaler (1796) and later, John Ives, Levi Hough II, Willard Allen, Horatio Hough, and Jonathan Collins.

A post office was established in 1826 with Seth Miller, Jr. as postmaster.

In the 1860s this was the most important business point in the lower part of Lewis County.
