The town was formed from Steuben, March 10, 1797; between 1802 and 1852, Brownville, Boonville, Watson, and Lewis towns were taken off and the town reduced to its present size.
The name of the town was derived from Gerret Boon, in Booneville, under the auspices of the Holland Land Company, whose members chiefly resided in Leyden, Holland.
The first town meeting (April 4, 1797) was held at the house of Andrew Edmonds, who was chosen town supervisor.
