Beginnings
As a teenager, John L. Childs came to what was then known as East Hinsdale and began an apprenticesho with seed and flower grower C. L. Allen. Barely a year later, he started his own seed business. Some historians credit him with creating the country's very first "seed catalog." As his business success grew, Childs began investing in large land purchases. Nassau County was creater in 1899, and the Village of Floral Park was incorporated in 1908, with John Lewis Childs elected its first president.
