The transformation of Island Trees (originall a 17th century Quakeer settlement) began with the arrival of Levitt & Sons, who started constructing what would become Levittown, one of America's first mass-produced suburban communities. The first houses in the Island Trees section were occupied starting October 1, 1947. The area officially became part of Levittown in 1948 when the name change from Jerusalem/Island Trees to Levittown was adopted.
