Beginnings [1]

Carlton was formed from Gaines and Ridgeway in 1822 under the name of Oak Orchard, which was changed to Carlton in 1825. The pioneer settler in Carlton, and probably Orleans County, was James Walworth who came across Lake Ontario from Canada, with his family, in an open boat and landed at the mouth of Oak Orchard Creek in May, 1803. He built a cabin and his nearest neighbor at that time was in Lockport, Niagara County.
