The area was first settled by Daniel Harrington about 1800. The township was incorporated in 1805.
Canton is located in Northern New York, near the center of St. Lawrence County, which is the largest county in the state in area, encompassing some 2,840 square miles. Canton is nestled at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and eighteen miles from the Canadian border. The St. Lawrence River lies only twenty miles to the north of Canton, and Canton sits at the edge of the broad St. Lawrence River plain.
