Beginnings [1]

Java was set off from what was then the Town of China in 1832. The first settler was Timothy Kerby, from Massachusetts, who came about 1812. Among other settlers about that time were William and Josiah Richardson, Daniel H. Wooster, Milo Warner, Daniel Smith, Elijah Smith, and Lemuel J. Paul. About 1818 Moses and Allen Twiss located near Currier's Corners and were soon followed by John Brown, Henry Woolsey, Rodney Day, Cyrus McClure, B. Dickerson, Charles Fox, and others.
