In 1880 Varysburg (named after William Vary who purchased 400 acres of land on which the village is located) contained a post office, grist mill, saw mill, cheese box factory, planing mill, carding machine, cheese factory, 2 dry goods stores, hardware store, 2 blacksmith shops, wagon shop, 2 shoe shops, tin shop, cabinet shop, tailor shop, grocery store, 2 churches, cemetery, masonic lodge, odd fellows lodge, and about 200 inhabitants.
