Located along the Columbia River east of Portland, Gresham was named for Walter Q. Gresham who served as an American Civil War general and subsequently as Postmaster General. A post office was established here in 1884. The city was incorporated in 1905 with Lewis Shattuck, son of one of the area's pioneer families, serving as its first mayor.
