Beginnings [1]

The area that is now Prospect was the site of the first settlement in Butler County, ca. 1796. At one time Prospect was the metropolis of Butler County. Raftsmen who stood on its commanding hill and said "What a beautiful prospect!" gave the name to the town. It was founded in 1824 by Andrew McGowan. The place was long famous for its academic schools. Notwithstanding its small size, Prospect raised two and a half companies in the Civil War.
