Incorporated from Worth Township, in 1926. At the foot of the Muncy Mountain, in picturesque Bald Eagle Valley. First settled in 1836 by Israel DeHaas. The town plot was surveyed in 1850 by 'Squire Clement Beck, who named the place in honor of his eldest daughter, Matilda. Population in 1940 was 646.
