Beginnings [1]

Situated on a slope with houses above the route on one side and below on the other, has well-shaded streets and a large business district. Woodward Reynolds and his bride came here from Kittaning in 1838 to occupy the 300-acre wedding gift of his father. Their sons, David and Albert, laid out the town in 1873.

The Soldier Run mine here was at one time the most productive bituminous coal mine in the world, with a daily output of 4,000 tons. Its deposits are exhausted, and the town is supported by a brickyard and glass, textile, and casket factories.
