Beginnings [1]

Pop. 1,825 []. Founded in 1742: named for Cornwall, England. The iron ore furnaces here supplied large quantities of iron for the cannon and balls made for Washington's army during the Revolution. These great iron ore mines have been worked since 1735. Visitors will find this an extremely interesting place. The Cornwall Charcoal Furnace was built in 1735, enlarged in 1741, and operated until 1883. It now belongs to the State.

The 2000 census put the population of Cornwall Boro at 3,480
