Hanover Township was incorporated in 1798 having been taken from Old Allen Township of which it had been a part. The new township had 736 inhabitants. One of the first settlers in the area was Martin Lazarus who had emigrated from Germany. Several early settlers came from Switzerland, including the Schelps, the Handshues, the Keenlys and others.
