Somerton

Somerton is a largely residential neighborhood (population approximately 33,000) in far northeast Philadelphia. Somerton was a village in the former Moreland Township prior to Philadelphia county's municipalities being consolidated into the City of Philadelphia in 1854. Somerton was named for Jacob Sommer [1758-1827], a Philadelphia native who served as an officer in the Revolutionary War. Sommers parents emigrated from Germany. Jabob's father, John (Johannes) was Moreland Township supervisor and tax collector circa 1773-1775.
