Prior to the 20th century when the area was annexed to the City of York, it was known as "Bottstown." Over time an increasing number of doctors located their offices in the 400-500 blocks of West Market Street, living in the apartments above. People started referring to the area as "Doctors Row." By the 1950s, migration out of the City began, and the number of Doctors practicing from their homes on West Market Street declined quickly.
