Neighborhoods

While early settlers in the area that would become York Township were from diverse ethnic backgrounds (English, German, Scotch, Irish) most shared a common background — farming. York Township was established in 1753, the City of York having been laid out a dozen years earlier. At various times during the latter part of the 19th century, the more densely populated areas of the township incorporated into boroughs: Dallastown (1867), Red Lion (1880) and Yoe (1893). After World War II the township began to transition from a predominantly rural township resulting in its present suburban character due to the many large lot, residential subdivisions that were built.
