A significant portion of the Goose Creek economy revolves around a U. S. Navy Strategic Weapons facility.
Prior to the coming of the first European Settlers (who came by way of Barbados beginning in the 17th century), the area was inhabited by nomadic Indian tribes. The Barbados settlers were mostly farmers who created a plantation system based on slave labor which lasted until the end of the Civil War.
The Navy began establishing its presence after World War II, and by the 1960s, former farmland was rapidly being developed as suburban housing.
