Neighborhoods
Lakeland, a suburb of Memphis, was incorporated as a city in 1977 in large part through the efforts of Louis M. Garner and the Lakeland Development Corporation. At the time a political battle waged between proponents for incorporation and the Town of Arlington which was in the process of pursuing annexation. The 2010 census reported more than 12,000 Lakeland residents. The city is part of the Shelby County School District which serves the entire county, except for Memphis.
