Missouri City has its roots beginning ca. 1894 as real estate speculators planned a town along the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway. Growth accelerated in 1919 due to 2 significant events: oil was discovered in nearby Blue Ridge and a salt mine was opened. By the 1950s Missouri City took on the character of a bedroom community for nearby Houston.
