The Bennington County Courthouse is located at 207 South Street, Bennington VT 05201; phone: 802-442-8528. In 1777 when the State of Vermont was created, it was divided into two counties, east and west. Bennington being the western county, and the eastern part was for a brief time known as Cumberland County. Over the next 50 years or so a number of subdivisions of these counties resulted in the 15 counties which comprise the State today.
