Madison City, seat of Boone County, was incorporated in 1906 at the confluence of Pond Fork and Spruce Fork creeks which form the Little Coal River. Known initially as Boone Courthouse, the name was changed to Madison in 1865, possibly in honor of President James Madison or for Madison Peyton, a coal man who was influential in the creation of Boone County.
