Livingston was chosen as the county seat when Sumter was organized in 1833. The town is named for Edward Livingston [1764-1836]. Livingston was Mayor of New York City from 1801-1803. He served in the U. S. House of Representatives (from Louisiana) 1823-1829, in the U. S. Senate from 1829-1831 and as Secretary of State [1831-1833].

Livingston became well-known as a health spa in the late 1800s into the early 1900s. The city is home to the University of West Alabama.
