Neighborhoods
Originally named Fremont, Vinton was founded in 1849. The first railroad came through to Vinton in 1869, and the settlement was incorporated as a city that same year.
The city was laid out in a rectangular grid, with most blocks subdivided into eight parcels. Early lots were part of "John Tilford's Additions," resulting in a consistent urban layout.
Originally, streets were named after prominent national and local figures (e.g., Jefferson, Polk, Clay). Around 1920, these were changed to numbered streets (east-west) and lettered avenues (north-south).
Vinton's homes reflect popular styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Second Empire, Italianate, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, and Bungalow.
Vinton began as a carefully platted county seat on the Cedar River, growing into a prosperous community known for its commerce, government, and distinctive residential neighborhoods. Its historic district preserves a rich architectural legacy and reflects the city's ongoing significance in the region.
