The City of Northfield, incorporated in 1965, evolved from land owned by the Bate family dating back to the early 1800s. During the Civil War era, the area was home to Glenview Farms, known for raising thoroughbred trotter horses.
Homes are found in Northfield that were built in virtually every decade of the 20th century.
‡ Prior to the Louisville City/Jefferson County merger (Louisville Metro) in 2003, Northfield was one of approximately 80 independent cities. Subsequent to the merger, these cities share some aspects of governance through various interlocal agreements. The Northfield City office is located at 4949 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40222.
