Beginnings [1]
Chisago City residents have a great deal of civic pride which is rooted in the history of the community. The City was incorporated in 1906 and became a true destination for visitors and residents alike. The community is a part of the 'Chisago Lakes Area' which includes Chisago City, Lindstrom and Center City. The Swedish heritage of these three communities has contributed to making the area a truly unique and interesting place to visit, live, and recreate.
Chisago City has a long history of settlement, and the community was largely self- sustaining through much of its past. Early settlers relied on such industries as farming and cash crops to not only serve the City but the larger region. Chisago City and the Lakes Area truly became a rural center that was full of activity and interest. The sense of community created during the early 1900s carries over today and is represented in the quaint downtown, the interesting historical sites, and the beautiful natural resources that remain a focal point for the community. The small-town, quaint atmosphere of the past is a significant part of the character and pride today.
The City holds onto this character, pride, and small-town atmosphere by preserving historical areas and creating new monuments and destinations that support the history of Chisago City. Such structures as The Creamery, Bloom Mercantile, the Vilhelm Moberg Statue, the Glyer Block Building, the Dahl House and the Melander House all help tell the story of Chisago City's past. These structures create a strong sense of place, and character for the community and remind residents of the unique and special quality of Chisago City.
