Located along the Des Moines River, Windom is the seat of Cottonwood County. The town was platted in 1871 by an engineer for the Sioux City and St. Paul railroad. It was incorporated as a village in 1875 and named in honor of Minnesota's U.S. Senator, William Windom. It was reincorported as a city in 1884.
