Ozark as described in 1941 [1]
Ozark, a trading center of a tomato-growing region, is built around the 3-story, red-brick Christian County courthouse. The town was platted in 1843. Although its population was only 100 by 1850, it boasted an excellent academy, the Ozark High School, which pioneered in higher education in the region and drew students from a wide area. In 1887 Ozark gained national prominence when justice was served upon the Bald Knobbers, a band of vigilantes secretly organized at Forsyth in 1884, who had turned into a marauding horde of night raiders.
Between Ozark and the Arkansas Line, US 65 winds among wooded hills that are largely given over to recreation. Bordering the road are numerous tourist camps, filling stations, and stands selling Ozark pottery and articles of woodcraft.
