Beginnings [1]

Bowling Green, the county seat of Pike County, was platted in 1826 and named for the Kentucky home of many of the town's early residents. James Beauchamp Clark (1850-1921) came here from Kentucky in 1876. From 1893 until his death, with the exception of the term 1895-1897, he was a member of the House of Representatives. He served as Speaker of the House for 8 years and was a contender for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1912.
