Organized December 14, 1818 from St. Charles County and named for Zebulon Montgomery Pike, commander of the Osage River expedition and discoverer of Pike's Peak. Bowling Green, which was settled in 1819, was made the county seat in 1824. Bowling Green was laid out as the same plan as Bowling Green, Kentucky and named for that city. [1]
