Beginnings [1]
A post office was established as early as 1809. Stephen A. White settled here in 1854. The railroad arrived in 1855. The following year Frank Mebane and Thomas Thompson put down roots, each building a house near White.
Incorporated in 1881 as the Town of Mebanesville with Stephen A. White (possibly) serving as the first mayor. The White Furniture Company was established that same year. 1882 Town records show W. H. Lasley as mayor-elect with S. A. White, W. O. Fowler, J. F. Trollinger, and D. A. White as the first commissioners.
The Town's name was changed to Mebane in 1883. It is named for Brigadier General Alexander Mebane (1744-1795, born in Lancaster County, PA) who served in the North Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War and as a Congressman from North Carolina from 1793 to 1795.
