High Bridge Township was formed in 1871 at which time it contained portions of Lebanon, Tewksbury and Clinton Townships. High Bridge was incorporated as a borough in 1898. It is named for a bridge (ca. 1859-1863) built by the Central Railroad of New Jersey across the South Branch of the Raritan River.
