It took awhile, about five years actually, to settle once and for all on a name for this municipality. Belmar was taken from Wall Township and incorporated in 1885, then named Ocean Beach. In 1889 the name was changed to Elcho Borough, but a month later, another name change resulted in the designation as the City of Belmar Borough, and, finally, in 1890, changing once again to the Borough of Belmar.
