Until 1975, Staten Island was officially known a the Borough of Richmond. The towns and villages of Staten Island were consolidated with the City of Greater New York in 1898, forming the Borough.
Prior to the building of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (to Brooklyn) in 1964, the interior of the island remained relatively undeveloped.
