Market-Mohawk Historic District

Columbus City, Franklin County, OH

The Market Mohawk [†] area, just south and west of Statehouse Square, has a fascinating history. It was once the site of the old Central Market and the Mohawk Public School—both cleared during the city’s big urban renewal push. That project aimed to bring new life to downtown Columbus, replacing aging structures with modern facilities and apartments like the Market Mohawk Apartments.

What makes the neighborhood especially interesting is how it reflects the city’s 1960s approach to urban planning and architecture. The Market-Mohawk Center, built in 1970, still stands as a signature piece of that era’s design style. In fact, it earned places on both the Columbus Register of Historic Properties and the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.

These days, Market Mohawk is a lively mix of apartments, offices, and schools. It’s home to the Ohio Democratic and Republican Party headquarters, Franklin University, and Columbus Downtown High School. While the neighborhood doesn’t have official visiting hours—it’s a working and residential area–it’s easy to explore on foot or by car.

If you’re nearby, you can also check out the North Market for a classic local market experience—it’s the only one left from the city’s original four public markets. Or take a short walk to the beautiful Topiary Park for something more relaxing.
