First settled in the late 18th century, Aspinwall was incorporated from O'Hara Township in 1893.

ASPINWALL[1], ( [in 1940] pop. 800 alt.,4,263 pop.), is a residential suburb most of whose inhabitants commute to Pittsburgh. Founded in 1796, during the decade that witnessed the early development of the greater part of this area, it was named for the Aspinwall family, early landowners. The PITTSBURGH FILTRATION PLANT (open daily), part of the Pittsburgh water system, is the largest slow sand filtration plant in the United States.
