Academy Gardens is a residential neighborhood of detached singles and twin townhomes built primarily beginning circa 1949 through the 1960s. Development of the area began in earnest post World War II and catered to veterans looking to purchase inexpensive "starter homes." Many of the homes have been expanded over the decades. Currently homes range from approximately 1,000 to more than 3,000 sqft. of interior living space.
The neighborhood is generally bounded by Grant Avenue, the John Byrne Golf Club, Holme Avenue and Pennypack Park.
Academy Gardens is alternatively considered to be part of the Torresdale neighborhood whose boundaries overlap and contain it.
