Early pioneer farmers began settling in the area in the 1860s. Incorporated in 1893, Sandy had become a mining town with a population of more than 1,000 and businesses that included 17 saloons. Sandy's first mayor was Arthur J. Cushing. [History of Sandy, sandy.utah.gov, accessed August, 2011]
