Mormon families settled south of the present Tooele City in 1849. Tooele City was incorporated in 1853. It was primarily an agricultural community which, by 1900, had a population of about 1,200. The Tooele Valley Railroad and the International Smelting and Refining Company helped transform Tooele into an industrialized city during the first half of the 20th century. In 1930 Tooele residents numbered about 5,000. [1]
